I dreamed of a huge outdoor table and dinner al fresco every night. The way our yard is currently set up, it doesn’t work, we need a patio refresh. The areas are kind of split up in our yard, the space for an outdoor dining table is small. The photo above is of our initial Ikea set up, I liked it but one of the benches broke last summer and then I was over it.

Here is the reality of the space now! What a difference a few years can make. The sun has beat up the paint, so I decided to sand and paint it to sell. By selling this table and bench it’s a cost effective way to help support the patio refresh. I currently use Facebook market place as I find it’s easier and faster to sell items.

I ended up scoring these AMAZING outdoor dining chairs for $50, including a table! The seat looks like cane, but it’s actually a plastic type material. The look is perfect for our small outdoor space and the chairs are surprisingly comfortable. I thought I would simply retouched these chairs with some Rust-Oleum Tremclad black paint. Then I realized I wanted to brighten up our outdoor space and give it a little life.

Are you considering an update to your outdoor space, not sure where to start?
Tips to help you with your patio refresh.
Inspiration
It is always a good idea to start an inspiration board, whether you save images on your phone or create a Pinterest board. Once you start saving images and décor you will quickly see what kind of style you are drawn to. I want to have an intimate and cozy outdoor space.
Colour
This is the easiest place to start, if you have some pieces you want to update with Rust-Oleum paint, first figure out your colour palette. I am going with white, black and neutrals.
Prep Your Pieces
Before you get started on your DIY’s for a patio makeover, take time to prepare your pieces. This might mean wiping off any dust or debris, sanding the material or stripping any paint. I have already sanded the chairs and taken the table apart.
Give Yourself Enough Time
Making over an outdoor space takes TIME! You need time to clean up the area, paint the furniture or décor, set up the new outdoor space and add décor or lights. Either set aside a few days to get everything done, or block off time to complete the project in stages.

Making over an outdoor space can be so rewarding. Sometimes it’s easy to ignore our outdoor spaces, but they are an extension of your home in the summer months. To be able to have dinner outside, read outside, have friends over to sit outside, are all really nice. I cannot wait for our patio refresh! It will bring new life to our outdoor space and make it much more functional.
