When I started redesigning this closet, I wanted to keep it open and clutter free. Allowing items to be found with ease, the printer to have easy access and a clean open space. I love the idea of an office closet. A place to keep all of the office/craft supplies out of view and at the end of the day the door can be closed. It’s rare to have a space like this for an office and I knew I had to take advantage of the closet. Creating the most storage I could without adding a lot of storage pieces.
The idea I had was to create a built in shelving unit with floating shelves above. This would all be on the back wall so there was space to walk into the closet. The last thing I wanted to create was a closet filled with storage. I wanted to have clean and simple storage solutions that looked stylish.

In the end I chose the Kallax shelving unit. Funny story here, I measured and measured to make sure everything would fit as I was going for a built in look. What I didn’t consider was the doors or the lip around the entrance to the closet. All of this meant I couldn’t slide the Kallax shelf into place. It fit EXACTLY in the space. I was unable to turn or slide the shelf in any way to make it fit! I know. Rooky mistake, but there’s hope yet. I had worked on another project for the Budget Guestroom and used an industrial glue. I decided to build the shelf in place and glue the one end on. It actually turned out. Lucky!

The best part about the Kallax shelving is Ikea has designed baskets to fit perfectly in the system. This made the storage look clean and unified. It is amazing how much is hidden in each one of those storage baskets. The supplies are hidden from view, creating a clutter free space.
3 Ways to Get Organized

Throw away items you no longer use.
Before you get organize your space, go through everything. I don’t know about you but I definitely keep office and crafting supplies I no longer need or use. Perhaps you can donate or recycle items. It will feel good to know you are organizing for only the items you really need.

Use storage containers to keep it clutter free.
Items such as baskets or small containers, not only give the space a cohesive look but keep everything hidden away. I couldn’t imagine if anyone emptied my craft box, it would be a disaster! All of the items are stored away in a neat fashion. Even if you are not making over a space. Look at the shelves you have, do you have items that could go in a small basket to create less clutter?

Create a labeling system
No point in placing everything in baskets only to have to look through every basket to find what you need. Next week on Budget but Beautiful I will show you how I created these simply DIY basket tags. Whether you use a tag, label or sticker, whatever the style it will add to your new organized space. I actually found these DIY basket tags added to the overall look of the office storage.
